Background and Inspiration

I grew up on a farm in the Irish countryside where the walls are never lacking pieces to exhibit. Every inch of the walls has a story to tell, told by different voices across generations and ages. We would often read each others tarot cards and this process of looking deeper at imagery and finding meaning has become a large part of my practice. Ill often find inspiration in the pattern of a wood grain or the imagery formed by coffee rind at the bottom of a cup. Nature has always been a huge focus for my work in which I try to better understand our place in it. I am predominantly interested in human experience and the depth of the mental landscape in both its uniqueness and universality. I am always inspired by what hides beneath the surface. In 2023 I graduated from university after studing psychology and in 2024 I moved to London where I am currently based.

Artist Statement

In every case, my inspiration is ignited by an instinctual moment of clarity in which the image becomes apparent. At times this comes while away from the easel and at times it comes deep into the process of painting. In the latter case, the battle with one painting causes it to metamorphise and present the potential of something not previously considered. It is this form of creation which I find most intriguing. In which an image arises seemlessly from the void and though displaying an appearance of randomness, hides images most available in the mind. It is when the artist tries so desperately to manipulate every element of the image that I believe the impact is lost. Rather, the artist should hold clear and concise their motivations and imagery so that they can come forth naturally. It is in this free and reactionary process of creation that I believe the most natural and exciting images may arise.
